Check the Air Compressor Safety Valve:

The valve should close automatically by itself. You can test the safety of the valve by plugging in the compressor and running it so it reaches the shut-off pressure. After this, pull outwards on the safety valve ring to release pressure from the tank, and the valve should close automatically.
